Plasterer in Leeds
Leeds has almost every kind of house a plasterer can walk into, from red-brick back-to-backs to 1930s semis and modern flats. Darren has spent 33 years in the trade and covers the whole city, so he usually has a good idea what is behind a wall before he starts on it.
Plastering in Leeds' terraces, semis and new builds
Big parts of Leeds are made up of Victorian red-brick terraces and back-to-backs. These have solid brick walls with no cavity, so penetrating damp and blown plaster are common, particularly on chimney breasts and end-of-terrace gable walls. Once the cause has been fixed, Darren cuts out the loose plaster and makes the wall good, or re-plasters the whole thing if too much has come away. He will tell you plainly whether the old plaster is worth keeping.
Further out, the inter-war and post-war semis tend to have sounder walls but tired, cracked ceilings, often hidden under decades of artex. Skimming over textured ceilings is one of the most common requests. Older artex can contain asbestos, so it should be tested before anyone sands or scrapes it, and Darren will go through that with you before any work is booked in.
Newer houses and flats bring their own jobs: settlement cracks and nail pops in the plasterboard in the first few years, plus knock-throughs, extensions and loft conversions that need boarding and skimming from scratch. Darren boards with dot and dab on masonry or screws to timber on studs and joists, then skims for a smooth finish ready to paint or paper.

Plastering questions from Leeds
- Do you cover the whole of Leeds?
- Yes. Darren works across Leeds, from the inner-city terraces to the suburbs on the edge of the city. Send a few photos of the job along with your postcode and he can give you an idea of what is involved before arranging to have a look.
- My back-to-back has damp patches on the wall. Can you plaster over them?
- Not until the cause is fixed. Plastering over active damp just means the new finish fails as well. Once a roofer, builder or damp specialist has dealt with the source, Darren can remove the salt-stained plaster and re-plaster so the wall stays sound.
- Can a cracked ceiling be skimmed without taking it down?
- Often, yes. If a ceiling is firm but cracked or textured, a fresh skim gives a smooth finish without the mess of pulling it down. If it is sagging or loose, especially old lath and plaster, overboarding or replacing it is the better option. Darren will tell you which after a look.
